What is diclofenac sodium topical gel 1% used for?
Nonprescription (over-the-counter) diclofenac topical gel (Voltaren Arthritis Pain) is used to relieve pain from arthritis in certain joints such as those of the knees, ankles, feet, elbows, wrists, and hands.
Does diclofenac gel work immediately?
Voltaren Emulgel contains 1.16% of diclofenac diethylammonium in a gel form. It is suitable for 3-4 applications a day for short-term pain relief, or for longer periods up to 2 weeks. It is proven to reduce acute pain within one hour of application.

Diclofenac topical gel is used to help relieve osteoarthritis pain in joints that can benefit from treatment through the skin. These joints include those in your hands and knees. How quickly does diclofenac gel work?
If you’re using diclofenac gel, plasters or patches on your skin, it usually takes 1 to 2 days to work. For arthritis, you may need to use the gel for up to 7 days on the painful joint to feel the full effect.
Is diclofenac gel safe?
Diclofenac topical can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, even if you don’t have any risk factors. Do not use this medicine just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG). Diclofenac topical may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal.
